About 3/4 of people think she’s Guilty, and about 1/4 of people say she’s Innocent.
Demographics
Guilty was split 50/50 by gender, and was perfectly diverse. I didn’t ask of them why.
Innocent was entirely women, except for one black man, who was also the only one to refuse to answer why.
Discussions
The first tally was for Innocent. She said there was something about “him”, presumably the husband, that just seemed “off”.
Several people, all black, said “she’s guilt as fuck”, literally word for word.
A “party” bus full of women looked at my sign and cheered.
A security guard from nearby said he was watching people tally and noticed it was “all white women.” I didn’t notice they were white, but he seemed to take race seriously, so I trust his judgment on that. After that I started watching and noticed it was all white women except for one asian woman. He told me he researched it thoroughly and strongly believes she’s guilty.
At least a few people who put Innocent said “the husband did it.”
One young woman who put Innocent said women’s mental health isn’t taken seriously.
One young woman put Guilty at first, saying she thinks Lindsay had mental illness, but later came back to “erase” her answer, and put a tally under Innocent.
One woman who put Innocent said she saw a video of the family at a zoo and Lindsay was juggling the kids while the man was unconcerned and at ease. I’m paraphrasing it to the best of my memory.
Several women differentiated between cause and justice, saying perhaps she did it, but she shouldn’t go to jail.
A few older women said Guilty, which surprised me greatly. One of them explained to me that she watched the case closely, and that Lindsay did it out of envy, because her husband had another child with someone else after her.
A young woman videoed me, slowly, from all angles, including getting behind me. When I asked her why, she said she just likes to make men uncomfortable. When I told her I wasn’t, she said I was lying. I feel so sad for her. Anyone who acts like that can’t possibly be happy.
Songs of the Day
There were two songs of the day. One for Innocent and one for Guilty.
Innocent was Pushit by Tool. There’s also the “Salival” version which is calmer and more drawn out, but just as intense and passionate.
The point of Pushit is that sometimes a relationship can be so suffocating that the only exit seems to be murder-suicide. It even has the phrase “choke this infant here before me.” In fact, this survey idea came from me listening to it.
Guilty was My Name is Mud by Primus. I’ve never heard any other Primus song, but a young man told me that whole album is great, so I’ll have to check it out. The 1994 live performance of it where his suit is an American flag is one of the most locked in performances I’ve ever seen by any live band, ever.
The relation to My Name is Mud here is because in it, he murders his friend entirely over an unmentioned trifle, with no remorse or even conscience. It’s admittedly a bit of a stretch, not commenting on Lindsay that much, but mostly I just like that song.
